Stigma of Mental Illness in Arabic Culture

Panelists

Dr. Mamdouh El Adl

(UK)

Prof. Nadia Kadri

(Morocco)

Prof. Tarek Okasha

(ASU, Egypt)

 Background

Stigma is a situation in which an individual is disqualified from full social acceptance (Goffman, 1963).  Stigma of mental illness is a recognized problem, which adversely affects individuals who suffer mental illness and probably their families.  Sartorius (1998) believes that stigma of mental illness (SMI) and discrimination against psychiatric patients are the greatest remaining barriers to improving quality of life of sufferers.  Kendell (2005) stated that stigma; feelings of guilt & shame and defensive denial make people with psychiatric symptoms reluctant to seek treatment.  In 1998, The Royal College of Psychiatrists launched a five-year campaign, “Changing Minds” aimed at reducing SMI (Crisp et al, 2000).

 Objectives

Highlighting the following:

  1. The importance of addressing SMI to help improve access to care & outcome of Schizophrenia in particular & mental healthcare in general.
  2. To demonstrate the efforts that has been already done or are being done in some areas of the Arab World e.g. Egypt & Morocco.
  3. To discuss the need for developing a Pan-Arab Anti-stigma Program & outlines its proposed main elements.

Topics:

Stigma of Mental Illness (SMI): Views of the Public in an Arabic Culture. Do We Have         an Arabic Anti – Stigma Program?

Dr. Mamdouh El Adl (Consultant Psychiatrist, UK)

Stigma of Mental Illness in Morocco

Prof. Nadia Kadri (Casablanca, Morocco)

The WPA Program on Fighting Stigma and Discrimination Because of Schizophrenia;      The Egyptian Experience
